This fixed-ring Snaffle bit does not swivel on the ring. Therefore it is less likely to pinch. When the rider pulls on one rein, the side opposite the rein-pull exerts pressure on the face to encourage the turn. The fixed cheek spreads the pressure over a slightly larger area than the O-Ring snaffle and makes it a little easier for a young horse to understand the request to turn or soften. This clearer communication is better for novice horses. However, the signal time is shorter betwen the rider taking up the reins and the bit pressuring the horse.

Rings retain independent lateral movement when you want to influence one side of your horse without disturbing the other.

This horse bit is a fixed-ring Dee Snaffle. Although this general configuration of bit is considered "mild", the square twisted wire of this particular bit makes it more severe than a smooth, large-diameter bar of the same configuration. It is sometimes used to enhance a trained horse's sensitivity because the uncomfortable nature of the wire adds more bite to keep him from leaning on the bit. It is seldom used as an every-day bit but might be considered for a strong horse.

This Dee-ring snaffle applies direct pressure starting at the horse's outer mouth. With this Dog Bone bit, the mouthpiece breaks in more places than a conventional single-joint snaffle. Under pressure the tongue is trapped but not stabbed. The bars are contacted more slowly.

This is a great bit for a young horse who is moving up and out of his single-joint snaffle. Transitioning to this mouthpiece will make stage two of his training more comfortable.

When the wire copper roller is added, it encourages salivation and gives a high-strung horse a mouth toy to keep his tongue busy - enhancing relaxation. This particular dog bone bit is extremely handsome.

Although this is a snaffle bit with no shanks, its wire mouth is more severe than a smooth-mouth snaffle bit.It is not usually used as an every-day bit. Instead it is used to polish a lax performance or enhance a trained horse's sensitivity because the uncomfortable nature of the wire adds more bite to remind him of his obligation to respond quickly and to keep him from leaning on the bit.

O-ring design slips through the mouth more easily than a Dee ring snaffle. The twisted wire, therefore, has the possibility of sawing across the horse's bars if used by untrained hands.

Copper helps encourage bit acceptance as well as enhance salivation and relaxation of the horse's jaw, poll, neck, and spine. For lateral movement, this loose-ring snaffle applies direct pressure concentrated in just one side of the mouth.

It seems to be a little easier for a green horse to understand a D-ring vs. an O-ring snaffle. The curved mouthpiece wraps the bars later in the pull - unlike the nutcracker action of a straight-mouth snaffle mouthpiece that hits the bars immediately. It grabs the bars later in the pull softening the bar pressure and delaying the bar action a little bit while the tongue action is working. The addition of the copper inlay in the mouthpiece aids in accepting the bit as well as encouraging salivation - thought to help relax your horse's mouth, poll, and neck.

Stainless Steel Racing Dee Bits With Copper

These are generally mild bits. All have copper snaffle mouthpieces of various shapes. The most severe is the wire-wrapped mouthpiece. The fixed-butt Dee configuration will be less likely to pinch the lips. Dee snaffles provide optimum lateral movement but are les efficient for stops.

This is one of the mildest bits for starting horses and riders. Fixed-ring will not pinch. Has plenty of side-pull with no leverage. The mouthpiece is smooth, thick, and has copper inlay to encourage salivation. A salivating horse is a more relaxed horse. He is moving his tongue and relaxing his lower jaw as well as his neck, poll and spine.
